Furniture that grows out of your walls

Alcove libraries, window seats, staircases and wardrobes — drawn, made and fitted by the same two people.

Before: a dead corner and a radiator

The client had two shallow alcoves nobody had touched since the 1970s, a boxed-in meter and nowhere to put books. We surveyed on a Tuesday and had a drawing back by the Friday.

After: 14 linear metres of shelving

Painted MDF carcasses with solid tulipwood face frames, scribed to a floor that drops 18mm across the room. The meter hides behind a magnetic-catch panel.

Who you get

Two people, one workbench

Hollis & Fern is Dani Hollis and Ade Fernandes. Dani draws and machines, Ade fits — and whoever answers the phone is the person who will be in your house. We keep three jobs on the board at a time, which is why the diary runs about six weeks out and why nothing gets abandoned half-finished. Everything is made 15 minutes away in a railway arch in Bedminster, so a wrong-sized panel is a morning to fix rather than a fortnight.

What clients said afterwards

“They spotted that our floor sloped before we did, and built the whole run to hide it. Six months on there is not a single gap.”
Rachel · Totterdown
“Quoted in writing, started on the day they said, and hoovered up every night. The staircase is the best thing in the house now.”
Tom & Priya · Clifton
“I sent them a bad phone photo of an eaves cupboard and got a proper drawing back. That is when I knew.”
Marianne · Bath
