Most people put this off for about two years

You do not have to know what to say, or what is wrong, or whether it is bad enough. Start with a message and we will work it out from there.

How we work

Northlight is three therapists sharing an office above a bakery on SE Division. We practise relationally, which mostly means we are interested in what happens between people — including what happens between you and us in the room.

Between us we are trained in EMDR, emotionally focused therapy for couples, and internal family systems. Those are tools, not identities. Which one gets used depends entirely on what you bring.

The first job is not insight. It is that your nervous system decides this room is safe enough to be honest in.

What we are not

What reaching out actually looks like

A first exchange, shared with permission and with the details changed.

  1. New enquiryTue 21:14

I do not really know how to write this. Nothing terrible has happened, I am just tired all the time and snapping at my partner. Is that even a therapy thing?

  2. Rowan, NorthlightWed 08:40

It is, and honestly that is how most people describe it when they first write. Nothing dramatic, just running on empty and taking it out on the person closest to you.

Two ways in from here — no wrong answer:

    • A free 20-minute call this week, no notes taken
    • Straight into a first full session, $150
  3. New enquiryWed 09:02

The call, I think. Do I have to talk about my childhood?

  4. Rowan, NorthlightWed 09:15

Only if and when it seems useful to you. Plenty of good therapy stays firmly in the present tense.

The practical shape of it

How long does therapy take?
Focused work on one issue — a phobia, a specific trauma, a decision — often lands between eight and sixteen sessions. Longer-standing patterns take longer, and we will review together at session six rather than letting it drift indefinitely.
Weekly, or can I come fortnightly?
Weekly for the first six sessions if you can manage it; momentum matters early. After that, plenty of people move to fortnightly, and some to monthly maintenance.
Do you see couples?
Yes, with Rowan and with Dani. Couples sessions run 75 minutes, because 50 is not enough for two people. We do not take couples where there is ongoing intimate partner violence — we will refer you somewhere better suited.
Is online as good as in person?
For most talking therapy the research says it is comparable. EMDR online works but needs a stable connection and a private room. We are licensed in Oregon, so you need to be physically in Oregon during the session.

The questions people email at 1am

What if I cry, or say nothing at all?

Both are extremely normal and neither is a problem. Some first sessions are mostly silence. That is still work.

Will you tell my partner or my employer anything?

No. What you say stays in the room, with the legal exceptions we go through in session one — risk to your life, risk to a child or vulnerable adult, or a court order.

Do you take insurance?

We are out-of-network. You pay us directly and we issue a superbill each month; most PPO plans reimburse 50–80%. We will help you check before you commit.

What if we are not a fit?

Say so, at any point, including after session one. We keep a referral list of therapists we would send our own families to.
