Six mats. One teacher. No mirrors.

A small shala for Hatha and Mysore-style Ashtanga, where the teacher knows your name and your knees.

How we practise

Slow is not the same as easy

We keep classes to six people because that is how many bodies one teacher can actually watch. There is no music, no counting to a beat, and no photographs of anyone practising on the internet. You arrive, you are given the next posture when the last one is honest, and you leave. Beginners are welcome on any morning — you will be taught the standing sequence on your own for the first fortnight before joining the room. Most people find that awkward for four days and then find it is the reason they stayed.

What a first month looks like

Week one is short: twenty minutes of breathing and the first five standing postures, and you are sent home while your legs still work. Week two adds the seated sequence. By week four most people are practising forty-five minutes, five mornings a week, and have stopped asking how long it takes.

Practice, and all is coming. — Sri K. Pattabhi Jois

What to bring

We are closed on new-moon and full-moon days, and for ten days in October. Those dates go up on the noticeboard by the shoe rack a month ahead.

What students say

★★★★★ 4.9 from 86 reviews reviews on Google
★★★★★
I came in with a frozen shoulder and a bad attitude about yoga. Anjali fixed one of them in a month and the other took a year.

No music, no incense, no talk of energy. Just careful teaching. I drive across town for it.

★★★★
The 6am start is brutal in December, and worth it by February.
